On 9th March 2003, at about 4 am. in the morning, we were woken by a police man, telling us that our 18 year old son was in a critical condition in the Royal Liverpool hospital. He had been attacked in the Liverpool city centre (Hanover street) while he was out celebrating his cousins 30th birthday. He died the following day with serious head injuries. Only one of the people responsible were taken into court, where he walked out through 'lack of evidence', the others have not yet been charged. At the time of the assault he was on his own after splitting up from his other friends. He bumped into someone accidently, one of a gang of at least five males and a number of females. Andrew's immediate reaction was to say 'sorry'. But this was not good enough, they had to walk him back down a street hurling abuse at him until one of them threw a punch (while he was facing the other way). He stumbled backwards hitting his head on the pavement causing him to lose conciousness. According to some witnesses, he was kicked while he lay helplessly on the floor.
Since Andrew,s death, we have not given up hope of bringing the people responsible to justice. This really is all we are living for. Andrew was a decent person, he did not have a bad bone in his body. He was hard working, and had just passed his fork lift truck certificate only days before he died, with a new career to look forward to. He had many interests, including Everton Football club, where he was a regular season ticket holder. Ironically his funeral was held at St. Lukes church, next to Goodison park, where he was also christened .He had two older sisters and a younger sister and brother, and a nephew an niece who have also been left with empty lives.
On 20th May this year we are hoping that an inquest will uncover the truth, and we can finally get some sort of normality back into our lives. We have also set up a memorial fund in his memory and have refurbished the waiting room at the ITU. where Andrew lost his battle to live.
